Trend Predictions for 2013

From wild haircolors to Miley Cyrus-inspired undercuts, 2012 was a year packed with unconventional hair styles. Some looks were highly celebrated—others remain intensely debated. So which trends will stick around for another year, which will be revamped and which have worn out their welcome? To get some answers, we asked our industry experts to share their predictions for the must-have (and must-go away) looks for 2013.

Will Ombré Stay? 

The new haircolour trend will be gradient color, which is a much more subtle and soft shading effect,extreme ombré has had its day in the sun, and that a more understated version will take center stage this year. We see [extreme ombré] phasing out, as it has been overkill. The look will go back to a prettier “sun-flicked” accent suggests that ombré doesn’t have to stick to its traditional brown to blonde graduation

The Verdict: Ombré lives on! This year we’ll see a much more delicate take on the trend.

Creative Color  
And what is the fate of eccentric haircolors like the lavenders and violets of 2012—what does 2013 hold for them?  It too is evolving and has become quite wearable on so many different women.” We are also a fan of these “cool pastels,” the shade is now robot colors such as Grey-Blue,  will show up as all-over color and in the form of highlights.”

Though last years looks are still popular, 2013 has lots more innovative color trends in store for us! “Turquoise will be a new trend shade. We see the emerald green (My favorite trend now) as winter going into spring and then adjusting to turquoise for a more summery look.”

For yet another twist, we suggest that, instead of rainbow-colored highlights, we will see more refined pigment pops: “They will transform into pastel highlights which are funky but a bit more subtle.” Joico International Artistic Director, Damien Carney has a similar vision for the new direction of creative color, “I see delicate, brighter colors that are soft yet somewhat strong. But only in areas of the head, not all over.” We agrees that the most prevalent trend will be “bright jewel tones – getting away from the drab and creating major pop will make a gorgeous statement!” This type of application, will bring elegance to the trend while having fun at the same time.”– subtlety is key!

Beguiling Bobs
All of these fabulous colors will be awfully lonely without a stylish cut to match! So which cuts will be en vogue this year? the Bob will be the trend cut of 2013., 2012 has been a year of overly long hair so I’m sure Miley and Anne Hathaway’s sporty short crops and pixie cuts will inspire a wave of short ‘dos to come. I’m also loving broomstick blunt straight bobs…looks amazing on super blondes!”
Like celebrity styles, the cuts of fashion models also inspire the masses. Karlie Kloss, the typically long-haired beauty, is now sporting a short cut dubbed “The Chop” for the New Year. It’s worn air-dried, mussed and free!”

Whether side parted, center-parted, curled or straight, it’s worth knowing a few basic textured hairstyles for long hair. Here are some to try:

Textured side part hair

Spotted on the runway at Calvin Klein, this spring 2013 hairstyle for long hair is textured without being too grungy or too messy.

The hair  created for Calvin Klein’s spring 2013 show has a little bit of a grungy feel that looks very natural and has that bed head effect to it. The simple style created for the show has a very rich and natural texture with – just like many of 2013′s hairstyles – a deep side part.

This look would perfectly complement an outfit that is sleek and preppy. It is very easy to recreate at home as it is just blow dried using fingers and it is not blown out to look perfectly straight.

 

 

How to: Calvin Klein’s textured side-part hair

To create texture and movement, prep your hair with Joico volume  mouse while it’s still damp.

Using just your fingers, blow dry your hair until it is soft and has a natural texture. Remember that your hair does not have to look perfect and shiny as this hairstyle is a little bit urban and casual.

Create a deep left (or right, depending on your best angle) side part using the arch of your eyebrow as a guide.

Apply dry shampoo all over to get rid of excess oil (if your hair is really oily) and add extra texture. We would recommend Vintage Powder

Lastly, set the look with a finishing spray such as Joico Finishing Spray to keep the style in place. Brush through from roots to tips to get a very natural and textured finish.

 

Easy bed head hair

This messy bed hair is so simple to create, you can literally roll out and bed and be looking amazing in just a few minutes. Perfect as as style for long hair, though also great for mid-length hair.

It seems like the messy bed-head hair is a huge trend for spring 2013 and lucky for us – the lazy, wash and wear hair kind of girls – we don’t need to put up much effort into trying to look cool. This hairstyle is probably not so advisable for the professional women who wear suits and skirts on a daily basis – it could give off a disorganized vibe. This hairstyle is for the more easy going woman who likes to have a lot of fun and experiment with style.

To describe this  hairstyle , it would be  “a girl who has bed head but still takes good care of her hair”. It is quite a messy hairstyle but it works well with the femme fatale inspired collection of BCBG Max Azria.

Part your hair in the center with a slight zigzag for a casual feel. This adds to the messiness of the whole hairstyle.

Use a thickening spray to prep the hair and the using a flat brush, blow dry the hair to create a full looking hair.

Once you are done blow drying the hair, add a Joico Cream Wax on specific pieces of hair and sprinkle it with Vintage hair powder to get the messy bed head texture.

Split the hair into sections and set it using pin curls. Let it set for 30 minutes before you loosen up the pins and let the hair fall loose around the face.

Now you have that sexy rock n roll bed head hair! To complete the look as it was on the runway you can pair it with  grungy black eyeliner.

The fringe / bangs.

From grungy, ‘indie’ bags to more slick interpretations; the fringe has been lingering on the hair trends list for several years running. In spring 2013 and beyond a hairstyle with fringe/ bangs is still an option for those wanting a new haircut.

Trends can sweep in as if on an unstoppable avalanche, changing the landscape entirely (until they run their cycle); such is what the fringe (bangs) did back in 2007. But it doesn’t have to end there. Some can drift on, lingering, having smaller bursts of renewed vigor. That’s what the fringe has done – and this year it stays on as a 2013 hairstyle of choice.

The fringe: how has it changed?

So the number one question you may be asking is, if the fringe never really went away, how has it changed for 2013? The answer is, it hasn’t really. It’s still best worn thick, blunt, and long (sweeping the top of the eyes preferably). And it’s still best worn in one of the following ways:

• with a messy, textured, neo-bohemian, grungy edge
• with an aura of ’60s sex-kitten nonchalance (think Francoise Hardy or Jane Birkin)
• swept haphazardly with a little peek-a-boo curtain a la Brigitte Bardot

When we talk about fringed bobs its easy to think of 1920s style cuts like the Louise Brooks. But while1920s fashion has been on and off the trend map, short sharp flapper cuts are not on top of the list this year. Instead it’s about an adaptable bob cut that can be styled in any number of ways, from a modern effortless look to a ’60s mod bob.

For 2013 the biggest trend for bangs is to pair them with a chin-length or shoulder-length bob. Models like Karlie Kloss and Edie Campbell have already made the dramatic change to bobbed hairstyles with bangs, with modern, slightly choppy and textured styles.

This rather goes without saying: bangs are perfect for hair shoulder length or longer, particularly when hair is naturally straight or with a slight wave. So while the bob is the most on-trend pairing for a fringe in 2013, long hair with bangs is still a style to opt for if you don’t want to go for an all-over shorter hairstyle.

There’s no real rules here, the fringe is more about face shape and hair type than hair colour. Any colour from black to red to blonde will work with 2013′s blunt bangs.

Here’s one for those wanting to experiment with bangs, without the need for scissors. On the runway at Prada models sported a fringe-style hairdo that was created by twisting hair up and sweeping it forwards over the forehead. You’ll need length to your hair to create it, but it’s simple enough if you do. Follow the how-to guide on creating Prada’s faux bangs below  for yourself.

 

 

And it’s a 2013 hairstyle that’s simple enough to create for yourself. Elegant from the back but broken by the wispy ‘boyish’ faux fringe, it has a kind of contradictory cool factor.

 

Start by applying a Joico Voloume Mousse  to slightly damp hair to give it some body or volume.

Blow-dry your hair roughly: do this by using your hands to comb through your hair in slight zigzag motions.

This look has slightly lifted roots and to get this, Tease  and apply some  backcombing spray and apply it all over your hair. Make sure you pay more attention to the roots of your hair.

Create some lift in the roots of your hair by combing it upwards using your hands. This will look as if you’re pulling your hair.

Smooth hair with a boar-bristle brush but still keep your roots slightly teased or lifted.

Gather your hair right above the nape and twist is to create a French twist. Instead of hiding the ends and creating a bun, make it go over the crown of your head down to your forehead giving you a nice set of bangs.

Now it’s time to work on your new set of bangs. Arrange them going to one side and use a super strength hairspray, such as Joico Finishing Spray, to hold your bangs in place.

True, side part hairstyles are always around. The question is in which specific styles to opt for in 2013.

 

t seems odd to describe a particular hair parting as ‘in’ – day to day most women will part their hair to suit the way it falls naturally or to compliment the hairstyle that was imparted to them upon their last visit to a hair salon. In a world of ‘whatever works best’, centre-parts rule. But for those of us for whom fashion is part of who we are, ‘whatever works best’ isn’t good enough. If you’re in such fashionable company, it’s likely that you don’t follow fashion trends but rather understand them, appreciate them, accept them or reject them and, if it’s the former, personalise them and make them an extension of your own individual style.

Style is what it boils down to. Statements too. And when it comes to making a statement of 2013′s hairstyles, particularly spring 2013′s hair trends, it’s going to be hard to overlook the side-part. It’s captured the imagination of catwalk stylists, hair stylists, us. Side parted hairstyles.

Wear it left, right, up, down, wet, dry, when you’re in a hurry or taking your time… Wear it if you have short hair or long hair. It matters not. The side part is not only 2013′s statement parting, it’s also its universal one. It goes without saying that if you have hair, you can part it to the side – even the tightest of curls will be receptive to a side part provided the right hair product is used. But as universal as this parting is, 2013′s take on it isn’t about just any side part. It is, instead, about a few standout hairstyles. Read on for a guide to each of them, along with how to guides for a variety of women’s side part hairstyles.

Deep side part.

Ask someone what a deep side part is and you’re likely to get back one of two answers. Some will tell you it’s a part that sits low and is closer to the ear than it is to the centre of the head. Others will tell you that it’s a part so sharp and obvious that it almost looks like a line has been shaved into the person’s hair. Deep, it seems, is an ambiguous term. So ambiguous that Marc Jacobs’ spring 2013 catwalk fused both interpretations of the deep side part. While working it with everything from an androgynous edge through to a 60s inspired one (see above), Jacobs’ catwalk single-handedly helped secure the deep side part a spot amongst 2013′s hair trends when the parting was paired with Ruby Jean Wilson’s newlyplatinum blonde hair colour.

But the influence of Jacobs doesn’t prevent the deep side part from working for either interpretation. Of the two, the sharp side part is the undoubtedly most popular. You could say that’s because it’s the easiest of the two to style, but in truth it’s because it gives you more styling options. On the catwalks Lacoste interpreted the deep side part with a soft feel that lived up to their ethos, Band of Outsiders had similar ideas though favoured waves over the sleek, Suno went for a wet-not-quite-rockabilly version, while both Jason Wu and Rachel Comey kept it tight and sexually ambiguous. In creating a look for Richard Chai Love, hair stylist Kevin Ryan got rather creative, offering up not one but two deep side parts in the single hairstyle and finished it all off with a low ponytail.

Side part and braid.

If, however, you want to see just how perfect the deep side part can be in 2013, look no further than Hervé Léger’s spring 2013 catwalk hairstyle. Here the deep side part was at times styled with a wet lookfinish, but it was the back-braid that perfected the look and yet still allowed this perfected deep side part to work for short and long hair. The soft side part

At the sumptuous end, there can be a real art to the deep side braid. At the other end of the spectrum is the obvious fact that effort was involved. That’s not a bad thing, but sometimes a nonchalant attitude is the order of the day. That’s where the soft side part comes in.

It was stylist Eugene Souleiman’s work for DKNY’s spring 2013 showing that nailed the soft side part. Perfectly balanced and working in a toned-down hair tuck, everything about DKNY’s side part, right down to the fly-away hair, says soft and says relaxed. Inspiration for similar looks can also be drawn from Lanvin’s spring 2013 catwalk along with both Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti’s and Derek Lam’s showings where straightened looks kept a soft, casual vibe.

Voluminous side part.

Take one side part, just add volume.

1960s inspired side part hairstyle.

That’s effectively the case here as a deep side part comes into play with volume. Naturally it’s impossible to overlook the influence of Marc Jacobs’ Edie Sedgwick inspired look. Complimenting Jacobs’ spring 2013 collection was a hairstyle whose roots were treated with a volume spray and whose hair was blow-dried straight before being teased to 1960s proportions.

Across your forehead.

The side part provides an alternative to the dominance of a fringe / bangs, with the length of the hair sweeping across the forehead and the shorter part tucking behind the ear.

For 2013, Akris gave the forehead sweep a soft finish mixing a slick crown and ponytail with hair left loose at the fringe while Band of Outsiders opted for a far more textured finish. Last year, J. Mendel’s showing used the style to great effect with TIGI hairstylist Paul Hanlon creating a look that interpreted the part with a thoroughly modern haistyle of texture, waves and shiny, though not wet, product. When you look at the pictures you’ll see it’s a style that is visually stronger for those with long hair, though not without its appeal for those with a below-the-chin bob ala Arizona Muse.

Messy side part.

You don’t need a ‘how to’ for the side part in general, with J. Mendel’s 70s interpretation, however, some pointers won’t go astray. Note that if you want to create a slick or wet take on the style, you can find more tips and how-to steps at our wet look hair trend guide.

To get J. Mendel’s runway look:

1. First spray the hair with a sea salt spray, then crete a low side part. Tuck the smaller section behind the ear.
2. Liberally spray the front of the hair with hair spray then blast it with a hairdryer. The side-part that covers the face should be super stiff and a little textured.
3. At J. Mendel, the hair team used the trick of pulling a net over the hair and spraying it with more hairspray to really stick down the hair.

Side braid

It’s stopped being a trend and become something of an evergreen hairstyle, and it’s certainly worth your time. The thick-hair beauty of the side braidmakes perfect use of the deep side part.

Side part with bob

If you have short hair that is either straight or wavy, take a look at the Mod bob; its 60s vibe can easily be toned if it’s not your thing.

Side part with waves

Chignon with sweeping side waves

Something of an updo, this is certainly an ‘event’ look. That event is probably going to be a wedding or something else where one is suitably dressed to the nines. If you’re in need of such a look than the chignon with waves and a deep side part might be on the cards.

Side part: earlier interpretations.

The side part isn’t a completely new hair trend for 2013, instead it takes it queues from 2012′s hair trends. You can do the same with the following interpretations, which we’ve edited to only include interpretations relevant to winter 2012 and all of 2013.

Slick, wet, tight.

This is one interpretation of the side part that is less dependent on your hair and more dependent on your face shape. Tightly slicked inline with the wet hair trend, this sharp parting has a masculine quality and works with everything from a short cut (think the 30s / 70s revival) through to longer locks. Custo Barcelona worked with the latter on their catwalk, working a copious quantity of gel into the hair to give a head turning factor to an otherwise simple, androgynous hairstyle. At the rear they styled each model’s long hair / hair extensions into a sleek pony tail.

If the wet look is too much for you, Tibi worked with a similar shape at their spring / summer showing filling the void left behind by the wet look’s removal with a rear clip.

Tight sides, long back.

If hairstyles that feature an obvious use of product aren’t your thing then tigher sides with a flowing back may be an option. Tucking the hair behind both ears, Lela Rose’s spring 2012 showing complimented the side part with light texture and a hairline twist. It’s that twist that is the eye catching detail for this particular interpretation – it starts at the side part, is worked across hairline, along the side of the head, before being pinned at the rear.

 

Flapper.

With the slow return of 1920s inspired fashion to prominance, you can be sure that the era’s hairstyles will again be equally as popular. Which means that a number of takes on the flapper bob will be popular. While the flapper bob works with a centre part, those with fine hair will turn again to the centre part.

Straight and elegant.

If the side parting that’s worn long at the back and tight on the sides has a casual air, then it’s safe to say that this take on the style is wholly elegant albeit potentially limited to being paired with eventwear and worn to said events. Jenny Packham’s last showing offered up the look; it’s certainly not revolutionary, but it’s here for what it’s worth.

 

Wet look hair

Wet look hairstyles were huge on the runway last year, and yet they’ve maintained their presence for 2013. Key styles to try this time around are theoceanic goddess hairstyle seen on the Alberta Ferretti catwalk, and thetextured wet ponytail spotted at Reed Krakoff: the ideal evolutions of gelled, wet look hair to take you into spring 2013.

Like Goddesses emerging from the water… That was how the models were described backstage at Alberta Ferretti’s spring 2013 show. And for a collection inspired by the sea, what better choice than a wet-look hairstyle? Rather than a slick, smooth combed-back style though, this was a bit textured and rough – waved like the sea itself.. And it’s easy enough to create at home – especially for those days when time doesn’t permit a wash and blow-dry.

With wet-look hair still on the list of hair trends for 2013, this is a good one to add to your repertoire. Find out the steps for creating the hairstyle below

 

 

Apply a volumiser (Joico Volumiser Foam))generously to damp hair.

Comb the hair back away from the face with a wide toothed comb. You want some natural movement and texture in the hair, so take care not to slick it too straight back.

To set hair, secure hair behind the ears as well as to the top of the head with clips, keeping the texture as you do this. Let the hair air dry.

When hair is dry, remove the clips. Apply a finishing spray to hold the shape in place.

Richard Chai Love used this interpretation of the low ponytail hairstyle to complement a very sporty spring / summer 2013 collection. The side parted, low ponytail worked well with tennis inspired looks, giving off the sporty and sleek vibe while still remaining polished.

Elsewhere we fawned over the low side parted ponytail that featured upon the Jenny Packham spring / summer 2013 catwalk. The hairstyle here was parted on the left and then twisted from the right side of the head going all the way to the left side of the nape, where it finally fastened into a ponytail. Simple yet stunning, this twisted low ponytail interpretation of the trend gave off both a classic and elegant vibe.

Casual, low ponytail.

It’s not hard to style a low, casual ponytail – simply gather all your hair to your nape. But a fashioniser needs to be different. Of course, you can leave it to designers like Alexander Wang to add some flavor to this most of low ponytail interpretations.

At his show, the models pounded the runway wearing a sleeker and more minimalist casual ponytail. The top of this hairstyle interpretation is flattened with a wet look style and then the centre part is lined with tape giving a nice twist, albeit an optional one when it comes to interpreting the look for yourself. Inspiring a simpler, gelled up and casual low ponytail is Y-3 whose models word a hairstyle where the top of their hair was gelled, brushed back, and then held together in a low ponytail. This low ponytail is the epitome of casual and is a great relaxed, everyday look.

Adding volume means adding some wow factor into a hairstyle and volume with the low ponytail makes the hairstyle edgier.

Reminiscent of the 1960s ponytail, Tadashi Shoji’s catwalk featured a casual, volumised styling of the low ponytail which, with pair a nonchalant attitude with plenty of flyaways.

Ultra low ponytail.

Laid back and relaxed, the ultra low ponytail is a hairstyle that has an almost ethereal quality to it. This low ponytail styling is held together a few more inches below the nape than those styles highlighted above and it lets your hair hang loosely around your face, framing it.

Taking advantage of this ultra low ponytail is Rochas where the very feminine yet tailored silhouettes of the collection were balanced off by styling the models’ hair in an ultra low ponytail.

Jil Sander also used the ultra low ponytail for spring / summer 2013, giving it a styling twist that everyone with long hair should try at least once. This particular version is an ultra low ponytail that’s very straight and has a modern-yet-serene feel to it. While a statement, it’s not very hard to recreate. 1. Complete all your usual hair preparation from washing through to applying heat protectant sprays or anti-frizz serums, and then blow dry your hair straight.
2. Create a centre part and then straighten your hair out even more using a flat hair iron.
3. Gather your hair towards your nape without tucking it behind your ears.
4. Secure your ponytail with an elastic and then slide the elastic down to about 2 inches from your nape.
5. Apply any hair glistening spray to add some shine to your ultra low ponytail.

2013 hair colors.

Platinum blond hair

Sometimes the things with the most impact simply take the most amount of effort to achieve. That’s the case with platinum blonde hair: if it was easy, every one would have it. Instead you can stand out all the more for rocking this ultimate statement colour.

If it has ever been out of fashion I don’t remember it, which is another way of saying that platinum blonde is a hair colour trend in 2013. With Ruby Jean Wilson as the trend’s most recent poster girl, it’s the perfect shade for channeling the retro, 1960s Factory Girl sentiment of the season.

So if you are going to change your hair colour, if you’re going to opt for a colour that shall set you apart from the crowd, consider a shock of blonde hair that draws the gaze of those nearby, consider the platinum blonde hair shade.

The look

There’s a reason Ruby Jean Wilson became Marc Jacobs’ muse, seemingly overnight: her fantastically fair hair. Her transformation aligned neatly with revivals of 1950s and 1960s fashion. It’s less about the curl-haired bombshells though and more a nod to the Edie Sedgewicks and the Hitchcock heroines.

With or without dark roots

There are times when dark roots are considered a desirable part of a bleached blonde hairstyle. But if you were to opt to change your hair colour to white blonde / platinum blonde in the near future I think you’d be safest to avoid the dirty-roots look.

If it’s an option, forgo the dark roots and opt for a full head of platinum / white blonde hair instead. This will mean more maintenance, but the overall impact of platinum blonde hair will be diminished should you opt for dark roots and wear it with an up do. Without under colours

The odd inch of dark roots is one thing, but two-tone hair or an under colour is another thing altogether. Thankfully I’m not really seeing people attempt the look, and as far as platinum blonde hair goes in 2012/2013 and beyond, you’re best sticking to a single colour.

The reasoning here is two-fold:

1. a second hair colour will reduce the visual impact of platinum blonde
2. platinum / white blonde in 2013 is about youthful elegance or a cooler-than-cool attitude; two-tone hair lends itself more towards the punk/grunge revival

Going platinum: who can do it

Contrary to what some people fear, it is certainly possible to go platinum blonde from near any hair colour, light or dark. Some base colours will simply be easier and faster when it comes to achieving the white blond result. The key to going platinum is to work with ‘virgin’ or undyed hair. If you already have layers of other colours in your hair, you may need to remove or grow them out before you can achieve an effective all-over platinum colour.

Work with a good colourist

If you’re not sure if your hair will handle going platinum, head to your hair colourist and get them to advise you. If your hair is already damaged or weak, it’s likely they’ll advise against it. While DIY home kits are easy enough to find, it’ll always be much safer to head to a salon and get professional advice.

Platinum blonde: suitable hair cuts

The latter of the two last points reveals much about hair cuts and hairstyles that work with platinum blonde hair.

If you’re looking for an elegant interpretation of platinum blonde then your preference should lean towards the year’s longer hair styles. From there you can style the hair colour in umpteenth ways with a preference towards either bombshell waves (below) or a straight hair style.

If you’re after more of a rock chic look, however, I can recommend one person you must keep your eye on for inspiration: Australian model Kate Peck. She has the look pegged, and pairs a dramatic hair colour with an equally dramatic hair cut to really set herself apart on the catwalk.

The last time we saw the quiff popular as a men’s hairstyle trend it as infused with rock overtones. With the indie haircut dominating the music-orientated hairstyles, the quiff becomes something altogether more refined in 2013. It’s still infused with attitude, but, as far as men’s haircut trends this year, it’s a very different attitude.
